$15,000 Donation to support prostate cancer research at EVMS

On December 14, 2011 representatives of the Coach Ray Barlow “Believe in Yourself” Foundation recently visited the EVMS campus to donate $15,000 which were the proceeds of the fourth annual golf tournament and to support EVMS prostate cancer research.

EVMS is developing tools that are designed to detect prostate cancer early and, importantly, to determine the aggressiveness of each patient's cancer.

EVMS will reach that goal by identifying key biomarkers — the disease's biological fingerprint — by using protein profiling techniques that can analyze multiple proteins at the same time. Evaluating these proteins is essential in establishing signature patterns that identify cancer, as well as the subtypes of cancer. This process could provide a highly accurate approach for early detection and diagnosis of prostate cancer, and with a more specific diagnosis, patients would have the information they need to make treatment decisions that maintain the highest possible quality of life.
